The Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a multidisciplinary organization engaged in advanced research, teaching and service provision in cutting-edge geophysical sciences and is one of the largest research center in Poland working towards understanding and monitoring the environment. In all classifications, IG PAS has been ranked within top 3 Polish institutions dealing with Earth Sciences. It plays the leading role in the exploration of the Earth, beginning from the atmosphere across hydrosphere ending in the deep interior of the Earth. The research is focused on fundamental issues in the physics of the processes taking place on our globe and covers the following areas: seismology, lithospheric research, geophysical imaging, theoretical geophysics, geomagnetism, atmospheric physics, hydrology, environmental hydrodynamics and polar and marine research.

Theoretical and applied geophysics with focus on: - Anthropogenic and natural geohazard - Geosystem processes - Earth structure & georesources - Climate change & polar regions The main statutory tasks of the Institute include scientific research, development, monitoring and educational activities, as well as dissemination of the results of the research and their implementation in the economy. It’s mission is to study geophysical processes for better understanding of the mechanisms controlling the Earth’s system and risk management, work for the benefit of the society and economic development, developement and maintenance of strategic research infrastructure and train future leaders of the scientific community. A very important aspect of the Insitute’s activitieses is its participation in the creation of global databases based on the monitoring of geophysical fields (stations and observatories). The Institute is also actively involved in international studies on the polar regions dynamics. Indeed, the IG PAS manages the Polish Polar Station at Svalbard –unique place with international status which performs monitoring in this part of Arctic and the Polish Antarctic Station A.B. Dobrowolski- scientific station located in East Antarctica (Bunger Hills).
